2. Non-Reversible Mechanism: Worm shafts generally allow for one-directional motion. This is because of the angle and orientation of the worm shaft threads, which makes back-driving (worm wheel driving the worm) challenging or impossible in most cases.

3. Compact Design: Worm gear shafts are used in gear systems where space is limited and where substantial torque needs to be transmitted in a compact form.

4. Helix Angle and Lead Angle: These angles are critical in determining the shaft's load-bearing capability, efficiency, and self-locking properties. A lower lead angle increases self-locking but reduces efficiency, while a higher angle improves efficiency but can reduce self-locking.

5. Materials: Worm shafts are usually made from hardened steel or alloy steel for durability, especially because they undergo high friction with the worm wheel. Some are coated or treated to improve wear resistance and reduce friction
